It's one of the BSDs, with a mach microkernel.

Yup. It comes out of the box with things like perl, top, ssh. You
can get a shell on the box and treat it jut like any other unix.

There's a project to port apps to OSX called fink. see
http://fink.sourceforge.net/

They're using the debian packge tooks for the project....It's
quite nice.

X11 isn't included, but it can be installed. There are window
manager hacks available to let you use the native window manager
for X11 apps.

No idea. Never used NeXT.

For me it's the best of both worlds. I get a unix-based OS with
a full suite of office/productivity apps all in one box.
