We have Mac OS/X running on a PowerBook.

It's a Mach microkernel with a BSD OS on top and a proprietary (grr)
GUI on top of that.

It runs well.

There's a "terminal" application in the Apps folder that can be
installed in your Dock for quick access. Opening Terminal presents a
tcsh shell. The filesystem is a Mac filesystem but all the stuff on
it is layed out like on a BSD system. There are a lot of GNU and
other Open Source software tools - bc, ncftp, emacs, openssh. Comes
with Samba and NFS and a full IP stack. I routinely ssh into the box
as well as out.

The down side is some strangeness in how it handles UNIX system info
like passwords and hostnames - looks like some kind of LDAP - probably
very handy in corporate environments.

Having spent a lot of time in ULTRIX, OSF/1 and Linux I am *very happy*
with OS/X. It feels like home and there are very few suprises.

XFree 4.2 supports Darwin, the core OS/X operating system but I have
not yet brought it up.
