Hi, there,
I feel obliged to share my solution for remote
mail access (original message is included below).
But before I do it I want to say thank you for all
advises, public and private, on how to set it up.
Thank you! Your generous help aided me greatly and
saved a lot of valuable time.
I finally chose Squirrel Mail over SSL. The reason
for this was pure marketing: the intreface looks
very close to other web mail services, like Yahoo
and Hotmail and others which helps customer
adjustment. In addition, Squirrel Mail has a
mature collection of various plugins, which make
it quite competitive. I especially like spell
checker, which has a bit unusual interface (but
not too unusual) and I actually prefer it over the
one at say Yahoo.
Squirrel Mail, naturally, uses IMAP, and I did set
up an IMAP sever behind a firewall, which is not
available from outside. I took the simplest
wu-imap I could find. As a side benefit, this IMAP
server does not have any config files, everything
needs to be compiled in. I did recompile it to go
to $HOME/mail/ by default to store mailboxes,
instead of just $HOME/ as it does out of the box.
So all works nicely, and if anybody needs an email
account on a side, please let me know :-) Happy
New Year!
