Right, the current boxes are running oracle 7.3.4,
netscape server 3.6, middleware from companies that're out
of business, on unpatched 5/98 2.6.

Sun has garunteed binary compatability with Solaris for a while now.
They claim that any binary that runs on a 2.6 system will run on any
newer version of Solaris. Is that what you're worried about with legacy
applications?
