The "can't open" error gets thrown cause the kernal that the hardware
wants isn't on the CD.  The hardware will be pretty simple-minded
about what kernel it wants to have, because other kernels won't run.
No use trying to fool it.  The hardware you have probably didn't exist
when this CD was cut.

Go look through a Solaris install CD.  You will see some perfectly
ordinary directories containing kernels for the various hardware
types.  I found out a lot about this some years back when trying to
run Jumpstart on some new hardware that showed up without install
CD's.  Ended up having to break out Snoop and other tools just to
figure this one out.

I second what other people said; you should have no trouble with
binary compatibility.  I have seen people tarball an oracle
installation and run it on another Sun with a different OS version.  I
don't recommend it, but it works.
