Ok, I figured the 64 vs 32 bit difference would
be the problem, but maybe eeprom flags, something clever

I think your options are limited to later releases of 2.8 and 2.9. If I
remember correctly, the documentation says that sparc III CPUs in a V880
will not support any release of Solaris prior to the 10/02 release of
2.8. Our experience with the V880 bears this out.
