I use DD-WRT on three different WRT54GL units. One is my main gateway,
and the other two are wireless bridges providing network connections
remotely to wired-only devices, like TiVos, Playstations, etc.
I can also get statistics on my bandwidth using SNMP (one of the reasons
I chose DD-WRT).
I believe they've managed to shoehorn it in to some of the newer
smaller-memory units, but not necessarily all models.
I got mine on Amazon. I believe you can still get them too.

That's what I use as well.
Because it runs openwrt...
It can optionally run OpenWRT[1], DD-WRT[2], and other third party
firmware, but for basic needs you may find the stock firmware works just
fine.

Actually several years back they cost reduced the model you'll find
locally in retail stores so that it has less capable hardware and runs a
different OS. If you want the capability to "upgrade" to a third party
firmware, you need to get the Linux version, which is WRT54GL. You'll
rarely find them on sale, but occasionally Buy.com discounts them.
