Making a branch and removing them is pretty standard practice. Another alternative is to modify the maven/ant build to just not include the source, but that's a bit dodgy. Hit that recently in Lang, we released in that way and missed the ignore in the junit part of the build.xml - so the tag doesn't actually compile its tests.
