I'm afraid you are talking of a different driver unless you mistyped bcm43xx_mac80211 as bcm43xx. Brand names are especially misleading for wireless equipment. All that matters in most case is the chipset, maybe the AP software, but not the brand name outside the box. Just because the same brand name is involved, it's only slightly suggests a connection between those cases.
