I've seen this flicker a handful of times on my laptop (acer ferrari 4006).
I haven't experienced it in probably months now, but it seemed to happen
randomly. I always felt it had something to do with hardware rather than
anything on the OS side since it mostly showed up right after I turned on
the laptop, before the boot menu (grub in my case) came up. I've only seen
it once or twice when the laptop was on (coming out of standby after periods
of inactivity) and it never happened while the broadcom card was in use.
Just my experience.
