I don't think I've ever seen it with the interface down.  The interface
is usually down; I only bring it up to connect to a hotspot.
Incidentally, now that I think of it, I often run it in monitor mode,
sniffing with kismet, and I don't seem to recall ever seeing the
problem under those circumstances.

Incidentally, I forget to mention, in case it is significant, that
keypresses are ignored when in "flicker mode".  They are apparently not
even queued; they are just lost.
