OK, I copied all the *15.fw files to /lib/firmware/b43
then did modprobe -r b43
          modprobe b43

Then I tried ifconfig wlan0 up      -    is that what I should have tried?

It responded with SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill
