Until now I have mainly used Slackware & SuSE only.... both KDE based.

Gnome is much more stable then kde, also fast.

For now my main concern is TV, dialup applications & download manager

by default u will get wvdial and pon, use wvdialconf to check ur modem

What download manager is there in GNOME??

u can install any kde package using apt or synaptic package manager. I
always using d4x as my download acc.
