Hi Srini, I would like to clarify on certain description that you have mentioned out
here ... ROWID is a custom implementation of Oracle and it is NOT ANSI 92 compliant ..
Different providers have different implementation ... And Oracle has this ... Now to
stress on the fact that ROWID DOESNOT identify a row in Oracle either. Only the
primary key can physically identify a row. What ROWID can do is to give you an
indication of the number of rows that are output to the screen or the stream. This
gives you some flexibility while coding. Hence If primary key is something that you
used in Oracle you would have used Sequence Numbers to generate this. And this is the
exact implementation and use of IDENTIY column in SQL Server. I donot understand what
stops you from using this. I cannot understand the feasibility study you have made ?
Please elaborate on the same. The second requirement of Audit is something that you
need to use Triggers for each and every table or write the same in-built with the SP
you call for Insert/Update/Delete. There is no special feature in SQL Server that can
take care of auditing automatically ... I do remember there were some third party
software that internally automate the same ... But I cannot recall on the same ... A
generic solution is not possible for auditing. Please revert back for further
clarifications ... HTH, Vinod Kumar Microsoft India Community Star
