Good
reply spark :) But that still leaves the difference in dark.

    Well,
               Firstly
"standard" - A non technical term - does not mean or refer to a software that
can be used for anything and everything.

It is just a term used to measure the
degree of acceptability the product/software has in the
market.

"Platform" on the other is a technical
term - that refers to a set of specifications and some concrete/semi-concrete
implementations. A base on which applications can be built upon.

NET & Java(J2SE) is a platform
- where we can build (potentially) platform independant
code.

NET & J2EE is an enterprise platform
- where we can build enterprise applications.

J2EE focuses on being "vendor" neutral and
takes a specification route and no implementation while

NET is also based on the same route. But
the current commerical grade implementations are from Microsoft only. Others are
too immature.

Now that we have the terms' meaning cleared, you should
have got half your question answered. That is both .NET and J2EE are
platforms

Now for the remaining part, which is a
standard.

10 years ago, if I asked anybody, think of a toothpaste,
the first name that would come to your mind is "Colgate" whether you use it
or not. But today some could say "Pepsodent", Not that you dont like colgate
anymore. There is a lot of hype and surrounding the word "Standard". If
a 100 big names use XYZ, it becomes a standard, if not then
it is not. Yes, it does matter how many people use it only to realize that the
platform or technology supports a wide range of business
applications. "Fans" size should not be the only measure, then it
would be like comparing apples and oranges and statements like "Java" is
standard but COBOL is not :)

I believe each platform has its own pluses and
minuses, It is after careful evaluation that one can choose which is better for
that kind of application. The more the pluses the more it is a
standard.

    Hope this helps.

Do I see people yawning there????

Cheers!!!
Arun

                 :))
                its much easier
                to learn to use .net

                .net is not
simply a bunch of specifications - its a operating environment
in which applications run - in that sense its a runtime or a
platform. also .net , unlike the java platform, is standardised.
the standards are avilable under the body called ECMA - net
draft has also been submitted to ISO.

                it is
standardised under the name CLI - the common language
                infrastructure.
