"...Let me say again the CLI standard specifies what the
runtime..."

CLI is a specification. What makes
it a standard ALSO is its openness and widespread adoption.

I feel the question was on standards
and platforms as terms for confusion.

We really should not be debating/comparing .NET and Java
from a non-technology perspective, owing to the fact that most of them are
decided today based by the management, partnerships, tie-ups etc, than pure
technical reasons. Technically, Most of them converge, overlap and diverge at
various points. As they address the enterprise application market.

As for
.NET not 4 beginners, I totally agree with Spark, Akshit and Others.

    Market today is less
choatic

As a developer you would cannot
make a choice or influence the technology to be used
As an architect you can only
influence and provide benchmarks to say which could yield
better.
As corporates tend to believe in the
follow the horses philosophy. If one big guy says J2EE, you find a lot of them
following him
Another turns and says, J2EE sucks,
.NET is the best, you find a lot of people moving to the
same.

So until the hype dies down and
people realize the real potential is when you would find a serious or sincere
attempt from companies to use a technology. We(Market) have been through a
crisis(DOTCOM burst) and there is a lot of hangover still left, so give us some
time too... :)

Good news, We(Market) have left the
cusp of confusion and expanding to realize the survivors and which to
choose.

    The only two
technologies that could really provide solutions and stay for a long long time
is already out there. I personally have never heard of a COBOL programmer
cribbing. Probably because he realized the same and either learnt COBOL.NET or
moved to C# :)

So stick to your investments, .NET
is perhaps one of the best moves you have made. Make an honest attempt in
getting up-to-date and be ready to deliver. Since you are a fresher, you have
less to lose than an experienced person still deciding over a fence :) just
kidding.

    Hope this helps.

Cheers!!!
Arun
