Your approach is right. You will not be able
to specify different authentication modes for diff folders.
The config architecture in .NET is
hirearchical. There is a machine wide machine.config file, the settings in this
file is intended to be overriden by your application (or web) config
file.
Having a virtual folder under the root web,
and specifying a diff config for the same is ok.

cheers,

in my project, few pages does not require authentication
whereas the pages in Admin folder section requires windows
authentication. at present i have done it using 2 separate
web.config files, one for the project and one for the admin
folder, but i was told this approach is wrong. Is there a way
that in a single web.config i can specify some location section
so that it uses windows authentication only for admin folder
                section pages??
