Assume that you have a table containing 50 columns out of which you want 10 columns 
for processing. The simplest (and most oft used) method is to say: SELECT * FROM 
table. It will work, but you are sending un-necessary data over the wire and this is a 
huge overhead. Also, SQL Server has to decode * to retrieve the column names which is 
an extra operation. Now, assume that you have written the statement as: SELECT col1, 
col2..., col10 FROM table. This not passes just the required data over the wire, but 
also protects you from future changes to the table. If col40 has undergone a change of 
datatype or has been dropped, your statement will still work and users will not 
suddenly see an unpected error from SQL Server, which will happen in the first case.
