I suspect that most people who are going to use the stable releases 
are using the packages for their own distribution rather than the 
tarball, and I guess that packagers are on this mailing list 
and read the announcements.

Personally as a writer of package creation scripts I've never liked 
much those, but it's still better than having to checkout the tag 
in git.
