I reran the flasher using a different SD card and it finally completed. It 
finished with all user LEDs turned on. (It seems that the end state of the 
LEDs has changed from all on, to all off, and back to all on).

It took about 10 minutes for the first partition and about 6 minutes for 
the second. 

I booted into ldqt, but it seems very minimal. There are no applications 
installed, not even a terminal program. I guess its back to the command 
line.
