Hi, welcome aboard!

In Fava, when you click on an account, you will see a list of all
transactions involving that account, including a running balance.

See for example:
http://fava.pythonanywhere.com/example-beancount-fava-12-2017-02-08-pypi/account/Assets:US:BofA:Checking/

If necessary, you can also filter these results (I too have transactions in
the future, do I usually filter on year-to-date)

Balance lines are a way to assert the balance of an account at a certain
point in time. For example, I input my bank-transactions about once a
month. I start with setting a balance assertion at the start of this
process, so I can be sure I don't miss anything.

Also, occasionally I forget to change the date when I copy-paste a
transaction. Balance assertions usually catch those issues as well.

Having said that, they're entirely optional.
