I think the fundamental difference in viewpoints here depends on 
the fundamental difference in list types.

Someone mentioned that they felt it was much more evil for a 
person to accidentally post to the group than to accidentally post 
to only a single user.  I feel it's the other way 'round.

But here's the fundamental difference:  I view mailing lists as 
communities, because that's what most of the ones I subscribe to 
are:  social lists.  "Take it off-list" is reserved for flamage, not 
(unless it gets unreasonable) slightly-off-topic chatter.  
Informational lists, on the other hand, are concerned with signal-to-
noise ratio, and posting to the list ought to have Pine's you're-about-
to-make-a-Usenet-post-you-know warning attached.

So it's a social, not a technological issue, I think.  Unfortunately, 
I'm excessively sociable, for a nerd...
