So imagine if you will an LD_PRELOAD environment variable which points
a users code over to the relevant libraries which work their magic behind
the scenes. I would be hard pressed to imagine using this for Excel, but
could see it for Matlab.
The underlying stuff behind excel could accomodate a distributed backend
without too much trouble. That's the whole idea of .NET; it provides an
abstraction layer so the user application doesn't care or know whether the
resource is local.
