I don't know if this is truly fear or a territorialism, but his behavior is
identical with what my 8 year old Flash does. Away from home, he loves
everyone, leans on them, lies on their feet, etc. In the house, unless he
knows someone well, he will bark at anyone - man or woman - and is
unapproachable by them. He doesn't leave the area as such, he will go in the
kitchen doorway and watch them. If they try and approach, he will get up and
move away, barking again. He has never made a move toward anyone in a
threatening way and if ignored, he will eventually approach those he wants to
know better. This isn't everyone! I am not terribly concerned about this
behavior as this is his home and if he feels he is watching and guarding it,
as long as he has NEVER made an aggressive move, he is entitled to be a watch
dog. If I need him to accept someone in the house who is new to him, I bring
him outside on leash to intoduce him to them before they come to the door, in
the driveway and front yard where he is very accepting. Then we all come
into the house together and he is fine, no barking.
