I hear ya - it could become a mess -

Your best bet will be definitely to use software policies and assign
application control policies - you may want to look at the unlisted
application standard or the one for standard required (it automatically
installs the app) or standard optional (let the user decide when to
install it - icon on bb home screen)

And of course you can always create your own custom control policies and
applied them to software configurations and then apply the software
config to users or groups -

One thing to keep in mind is that if you have an IT Policy that prevents
an action that you have enabled under the control policy then the IT
policy will override this setting - I found that out the hard way - I
had an IT policy to disallow external connections then I had a control
policy for a certain application to allow external connection - well,
the app never got installed due to the IT policy overriding this setting
-

Thanks for the reply Mo. Well, we have groups - however haven't looked
into the Software Policy Only option, I will check that out today/this
weekend!

As far as users doing their own update, I would only be leary on two
counts...one) Users cannot be responsible for something like doing an
update, the only way (without opening up policy) is to have them install
software and perform the update. Invariably something will get lost, a
backup wont get done, they will checkmark the box to wipe everything
(bye bye wedding pictures, pictures of the baby etc) and get pissed at
ITS due to their incompetence.

So do we hold those folks hands? Do we open up and start to support
multiple levels of operating systems? I suppose I just adhere to a
loosely written policy and just tell users to stop looking at the icon
flashing. Don't open Pandoras Box!

My rant for the day, thanks for listening...Enjoy the Superbowl next
weekend!

Hi,

Have you look into creating groups - one for company owned, another one
for individual owned -

Assign the software policy only to the company owned group.

Have you look at the web desktop for those users who may want to do the
updates themselves (that is if you have bes 5 and later)

Hello all,

We have about 150 users in Exchange/BES environment. About 130 of those
devices are not Corporate owned. When an individual gets an OTA update
(Options - Advanced Options - Wireless Update) our BES is blocking the
ability to do this. Works great for those Corporate owned folks,
however those devices that are owned by the individual, I seem to be
visiting a lot because they want / need the latest update, or they are
just bothered of seeing the desktop icon that says update available.

With this said, I know that my options could be to allow the updating of
personal devices, however how would you do this? Users would have
different platforms making troubleshooting a pain.

Is there a way to completely hide the icon (by policy) that appears on
the BBs desktop and also suppress the Wireless Update portion as
mentioned above?

Thanks in advance...
