BTW Micro$oft does not just delete delete stuff, i moves it to a bin, and only empties
that when it gets overfull ... so look for "$Recycle Bin". Has saved my bacon
many a time;-)

Touche. Serves me right for teasing you about Pirate talk.

I usually do rename the old folder, but thought a cleaner installation might
get over that slow loading problem I'd had. (it hasn't!)
As for backing up - yes of course, but..... ie the same old story
Thanks,

Mike

The standard J installation puts ~user outside of ~install so as to preserve it
on uninstall.
Also, we only suggested a reinstall. J does not touch the registry, so the easy
thing to do is rename the old J802 folder as a backup before installing again.
BTW, backing up every few weeks is asking for trouble. Why not backup every day?

Because that's where it's always been! I had thought that this was tolerated
despite not being preferred. Same as I keep ws and myws folders under dyalog
apl despite that not being their recommendation.

Uninstall should remove the ~install folder, ~addon is under ~install folder so
it will be removed. However ~user should be a separate folder created by
default profile. Why you would prefer putting ~user under ~install ?

I took you at your word and uninstalled J802 ready to reinstall from scratch,
taking the precaution of renaming user as user802 so it wouldn't get
overwritten or deleted. I did consider setting it as read-only but thought
better of it. Admittedly, my user folder sits under j802 rather than in
j802-user or whatever.
To my horror, I saw all user802 files and folders deleted. Luckily I do have a
back-up disk which is a few weeks old, but I've lost all recent stuff. Luckily
(!?) I was smart enough to copy addons and profile....ijs to another area, to
save time reinstating them later.
I thought (obviously wrongly) that uninstalls usually left user-defined files
and folders untouched.
It might be worth warning other users of this feature.

Now to see what goes wrong with install...

Aaaaargh - debugger be not ready for thee Beta Jay - sounds like my Avast in "talk
like a Pirate" (or parrot) mode! Thankee, Chris.
Seriously though - I continue to have J602 up and use its debugger when in a
J802 fix. OK for plain programming problems.

Calling the Debugger from the Run menu used to be an option which I found very
useful. Is that likely to be restored?

A new 802 beta is available for most platforms. As before, install from
http://www.jsoftware.com/download/j802/install.

Please try reinstalling from scratch, thanks.
