This is different from custom keys. What Mike was asking was if we could preserve the old behavior with a config, which wouldn't be too hard.
We could make everything customizable, but I am not keen on that at all. It would be a lot of work for us, and likely more trouble than it is worth. I'd rather stick to what has worked well for us in the past, or if we do make changes, then move in the direction of typical key mappings for plain text editors, like that proposed for Ctrl+/.
