J is as compatible as practical on all platforms. Some differences are
obvious and some are subtle and nasty. We intend to spend our scarce
resources on reducing the incompatibilities rather than taking on the
arduous and largely thankless task of documenting them. If you discover
something you think other users would benefit from knowing, then working
through the J wiki is the way to go.
Never hesitate to briefly report of problem with J on any platform.
Especially if you can give easy steps to reproduce. Just don't hold your
breath for a fix if the problem is in a backwater area.
IFWINCE tells you if you are running in a wince environment. Whether you
are running on a real wince machine or an emulator is irrelevant.
Can't think of any reason for J to disappear and certainly not over a
sleep or power down/up. Do some careful tests and perhaps a bug report
with more details is warranted.

Subject: Re: [Jbeta] Pocket PC Beta
Eric, can you clarify a few questions I had?
Is the intent of the Pocket PC version to be as compatible as
practical with the larger versions? In other words, how easy will it
be to move applications back and forth between host systems,
especially the Pocket PC as it is so different? I have never played
with the Mac or LINUX versions, but I always felt that applications
developed on one system could move to another as long as one avoided
using facilities not supported on the target systems. And will there
eventually be a statement about things that don't work on the Pocket
PC like there is now for the other systems?
I was hesitant on reporting what I saw as some of the problems with wd
seemed so obvious that either you must have already known about them
or there was something unique about my particular Pocket PC.
A couple of specifics:
You imply that IFWINCE will tell me if an application is running on a
Pocket PC. Can't Windows CE run on laptops and desktops as well?
Also, J seems to disappear on the Pocket PC for no apparent reason.
When the Pocket PC goes to sleep and I wake it up later J is still
there, but other times it's gone.

Thanks for the feedback. Some of the issues you raise may be
addressed before the final release. Some are just quirks of the
PocketPC over which we have no control.
The answer to what may have been your most important question: noun
IFWINCE (like IFJAVA and friends) will help you customize your code
and workaround problems.
