In response to Raul's comment: I should have -- but didn't, sorry --- provided more details about the setups. These crashes have occurred on two separate (different manufacturer) computers, running (respectively) XP/Home and XP/Pro, both sp2 and both up-to-date in that regard. Both run Mcafee's Virus Scan. One is almost new (4 months old); so I tend to think it's probably not a question of defective memory etc (but of course you never can tell).
I also don't know whether Windows having to close the program means that a windows-core dll is responsible, but given that I could crash J via a bad call to the reg-exp dll, I tend to think not (or at least, not directly).
Is it just me? Of have others also found crashes more often than they would have expected?
