Did you try to invoke the break icon two
(or more) times in a row--that's how it
forces the break out from a deep cycle.

Also you may want to check the memory:
if disk thrusting happens, than it's the
operating system that becomes irresponsive,
so you can't help it until it finished swapping.
To solve that you need to manage memory
use with probably lowering the memory limit
or restructuring your code.
