The vcredist files required are actually
J64 amd64_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762*
J32 x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762*
where the * indicates minor differences that are acceptable because of the
confused way that MS released this stuff.
These files (and a gazillion others) are in the \windows\winsxs (side by
side) folder that was supposed to solve the problems of 'dll hell'. As far
as I can tell the problems have been compounded.
I'd be very reluctant to have anything to do with distributing these files
in the J directory. I think we are stuck with requiring this standard MS
Service Pack. As time goes on more and more systems will already have it
installed and I can't believe that the next Vista version or SP won't
include it.

"The new J32 binaries require
"Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)"
to be installed on XP. "
Vista required this as well.
I saw another application (firebird database, to be specific) include and
install these two files- msvcr71.dll and msvcr71.dll in the same folder as
the binary, so that users do not need to download or install window
update. IMO this is preferred where internet access or privilege needed
to install window update is not available.
