Devon,
I suspect that something in the startup script for jhs loads the 'dir' script.

In a fresh console session (J6 or J7) I get a "value error" for dir (perhaps 
you are loading the alternate version in your startup script?)

If you "load 'dir'" in the console you will get the same behaviour as the 
browser front end.

The left argument for 'dir' is documented in the 'dir' script
  open 'dir'
