Ric - thanks for your help.

I was using jconsole under Windows XP.  Now that I'm doing as you said, it's
behaving much better: viewmat works.

I don't suppose there's any easy way to use the Gtk functionality from emacs
using jconsole, like jee allows me to do graphics under J6.01?
