Thanks for the detailed bug report.

One problem is that with ijs readonly the esc w and esc e doesn't work
because it moves the caret position and there is no caret position in
readonly. I will probably switch to selecting the found texts and I think
this will allow esc w and e to work. I tried to get away with just the caret
as it is far simpler code than working with selections.

Please confirm that find/esc w/esc e work as described if the text is
editable.

Are you with IE7 or IE8? Things work for me in IE8 and I'd like to assume
that you are using IE7. I don't immediately have access to IE7 for testing.
I was amazed when the numbers worked so nicely in IE8, FF, and chrome. I
guess I shouldn't be surprised they don't work in IE7. May be easy to fix.
Or impossible.

There seems to be an obvious 3rd section in your report that isn't marked,
but I assume it is for  Chrome.
