Thank you Eric ... that solved the problem. I didn't realize that I would need to totally reboot the system in order to clear out all previous 'stuff'.
Jconsole runs correctly and JHS also starts. I am sure that eventually I will find my way to the JHS help material so that I can gain my meagre functionality back.
