On my Mac under Snow Leopard, jhs is beginning to have a firm feel about it. A nice feel.
With Firefox I could get used to jhs as my main development environment, since my main interest right now is in browser-based apps. To expect my clients to download and install j701 is no worse than Adobe expecting me to download and install Flash. I suppose there isn't a GTK ide for the Mac yet? I've tried running /Applications/j701/addons/ide/gtk/gtk.ijs but nothing happens. I guess it's just for M$ Win? I'm not that worried: coding browser apps will incline me towards jhs. A tip: if I put the following lines in my startup.ijs: smoutput' >>> startup message1' launch_jtask_'http://127.0.0.1:65001/jfile' launch_jtask_'http://127.0.0.1:65001/jijx' smoutput' >>> startup message2' then clicking the red J icon launches Firefox with two operative windows in the tabs, which is nice and handy. Is this the way I ought to be doing it? I'd just like to say about the smoutputs: neither appears in the /jijx browser window. Both appear in the tty session: a window which on the Mac is provided by a library utility called Terminal (which runs bash scripts and anything linux-y). It would be nice to hide or minimise this Terminal window automatically, but I can't find out how yet. The two smoutputs appear in my Terminal window like so... Better: for " >>> startup message2" to appear in the /jijx browser window, ie any subsequent smoutput after launching /jijx to be redirected to it. BTW: I've updated http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/System/Beta/HelloWorld to reflect the current structure of locale 'jhs'. There's nothing it offers which is not provided in fuller detail by the jdemo collection, but it might clue-up the j7 novice quicker to read HelloWorld first. Thanks for a great new product. Always wanted a really flexible engine for use with HTML+Javascript. I think I can see my way now to migrating all my favourite apps to the browser.
