I can duplicate the iPhone incorrect launch icon problem in a simulator. It works properly on a non-retinua iphone, but fails as described on an retina iphone.
The retina iphone is looking for the best png to use and for some reason decides that the larger launch image is preferable to the small icon image. Rather than strech the small icon to fit, it is squeezing the much larger launch image.
