I think the important bit of information you are missing is where the special meanings for ~ come from. In a unix/linux environment, the shell will re-interpret ~. You can see that for yourself: $ echo ~ $ echo ~root If you put this in quotes you get very different behavior $ echo "~" $ ls "~" The J 1!:n behavior for ~ is like the behavior you get in the shell for quoted names. Meanwhile, the J ~ behavior is implemented in jpath.
