To some extent I agree, but placing the server on the public internet
for people you may or may not trust is a whole other ball game when it
comes to security concerns.

I think the addition of user accounts and profiles are inevitable and
find it hard to believe they're not on the roadmap for future
SlimServer development.  No doubt it's a major rewrite of most of the
server, so I'm sure that's a big factor.  The big push for user
profiles, though, in't necessarily security related.  It's things like
having the ability to have different music libraries for different
users, and having individual user interface preferences such as the web
interface skin.  Setup security would almost certainly be built into
this - you'd have certain settings that are server-wide; performance
settings, for instance, that only an admin could set.
