I tried reinstalling with no luck. I can get it to run as an applet,
but since it's not on the server, I can't figure out how to edit server

You need to make sure you are using Java 1.4 or Java 5 to run
Softsqueeze. I think you will get this error with Java 1.3 or earlier.
The applet is a cut down version of Softsqueeze (for example no
preferences or settings), and this will run on Java 1.3.
