I am coming up to speed on this stuff, and it's a little scary. I'm trying to synch a device that's on wireless with what plays on my desktop computer. I've got SlimServer 6.3.1 running just fine. (I've also played with 5.4.0)
I've run SoftSqueeze 1.1, 2.3, 2.4.1, 2.7, and 2.8. With all that experience I'd like to report some problems that I'm experiencing under MacOS 10.3.9 since the 2.4 update. 1. (Minor, Known): 2.3 complains that the 6.3.1 server is better accessed with a later version of SoftSqueeze. 2.4 and its successors are supposed to remedy that Except: 2. (Major, apparenlty New): "New Skinning Code" that was added to 2.4 is badly broken under MacOS 10.3.9. I opened bug 1559864 in SourceForge about it. Text is half size, appears twice across two rows, with alternating colums in the upper and lower rows of display. 3. (Minor, but disruptive, Known): Later versions seem to default to "localhost" which doesn't work. But now I know to modify the hostname to "<my computer>.local. This however disrupted other testing. 4. (SHOW STOPPER, apparently New:) No sound comes out of 2.4.1 and later versions. As with 2.3, the Audio Mixer and decoder seems to be properly seen and specified. I believe I've tested 2.8 both with and without the Java Audio extension, but the test without it was hours ago when I was much less cluful about this package. Interestingly, SOME of SoftSqueeze is quite functional. The device in my living room dutifully plays the playlist when I hit the <PAUSE> key to un-pause the synchronized playback. Hmmm... that last paragraph may be unclear. Steps to repeat: a. Start 2.3. Configure it as synched with hardware device. Play some music. Confirm all is well with sound in both rooms. b. Hit the pause button in SoftSqueeze. Computer and livingroom go silent. c. Start 2.4.1, or 2.8. Configure it as as synched with the Living room, and the ghost of 2.3. d. Hit the pause button. Hear silence from computer, and sound from living room. 5. (Feature request): Ability to delay startup by a constant amount of time. SlimServer lets me add delay to the startup for my hardware device, but not for my SoftSqueeze. (Is that because SoftSqueeze advertises rev 1 instead of rev 40?) My hardware device is always half a second late. If I could configure the feed from SlimServer to the SoftSqueeze to be half a second late, the two playbacks would stay in synch, and would correctly restart with the proper offset on every new song. Hope this barrage of issues is helpful rather than intimidating. Thanks for working so hard to make such a rich and cool piece of free software.
