It turns out it was a bug that stopped Softsqueeze 2.4 running with
Java 1.4. Thanks for reporting it.

I have fixed that and another couple of issues mentioned in this
thread, Softsqueeze 2.5 will be in the next slimserver nighlies and is
available on Sourceforge.
