I'm sorry you've had so many problems getting Softsqueeze to work. AFAIK it normally works out of the box. I would be interested if you know how to recreate the font bug?

Also sync will never work correctly on OSX due to a bug/feature in Apple's Java implementation (that's mentioned on the softsqueeze website).
