It's in the startup folder.

Yes. The item in the startup group is the task try icon. That app will see  
whether SC is configured to be run as a service or app. If it's an app, it  
launches it. If it's a service, it doesn't do anything but offer a link to  
open the web interface. In app mode we don't start SC directly, but only  
that helper app.
