There's another aspect of the whole service vs. user app decision that
I've been a little reluctant to bring up.

Obviously, there are support issue with running SlimServer as a Windows
service. The issues seem to primarily be 1) the inability to use mapped
drive letters (because they're associated with specific user accounts)
2) the inability to access network shares (because the local SYSTEM
account has limited network priveledges) and 3) the inability to access
a particular user's iTunes database (because the local SYSTEM accunt
isn't a particular user).

But I have to wonder whether running SlimServer as a user application
for all new installations may not raise an equal or greater number of
support headaches.

1) If the user logs out, all Squeezeboxes go dead and all music
streaming stops. This will be a huge problem on any Windows PC that is
used by more than one person. Husband/Wife, Mom, Dad and the kids. I
may be missing something here, but how do you expect the typical user
to understand that SlimServer will not be accessible (and all their
Squeezeboxes will be doorstops) until that _one_ user logs back into
the PC?

2) The system is unready to run when the computer is started up. No
user, no SlimServer.

Are you maybe just trading one set of support problems for another????
