It sounds like you are running Windows. If so, I think the squeezecenter.exe process was started but for some reason never completely starts up. I don't why this happens, but I've seen it myself a few times. The below procedure has worked for me every time. To fix it, open up Task Manager. You should see a SQUEEZECENTER.EXE process or a something similar, like SQU~1NTER.EXE. Kill that process. Then uninstall SqueezeCenter from the Start menu, and reinstall SqueezeCenter. It should work after that. You should probably check and see if you have an older SlimServer running or installed. If so, you should uninstall it before reinstalling the latest SqueezeCenter.
