OK, I've got to the bottom of this.

As I mentioned previously, my top-level music folder contains a pair of
shortcuts to the actual locations, because the library is split across
two disks.

Those shortcuts were set up as UNCs (eg.
*\\musicserver\cdrive\FLAC.A-M*). I replaced them with shortcuts using
drive letters (eg. *E:\FLAC.A-M*) and the display now works correctly -
only the last component of the pathname being shown.

So: panic over, and possibly a useful piece of info for Windows users.
