I'm facing the exact same problems. Everytime I try browsing by genre and (in a genre) click on "Various Artist" the server just freezes - no response, 50% CPU usage (-> one core is fully used). Just a total reboot can help.
And that happens with about 4000 songs (40% FLAC) on a AMD BE-2350, 2 Gig RAM machine... Pretty sad thing to happen. Turning statistics off speeds up the process a bit but it still is a bit slow (about 5 secs)...
