If your problem is related to the problem I pointed out in the thread cited above, it's because mysqld is parsing MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of rows simply to get counts of artists, albums, etc. I'm not sure I ever convinced Dan Sully that this was really happening.
Can you tell us more about your library? Format? Embedded cuesheets?
