Whew, after a couple of hours of messing about with wireless settings I finally got it working! The "fields" command was very useful, and I had to set lots of stuff in the list. Note that for a 256bit WPA key, you need to set the wireless_keylen=2 which is not a value in "fields" documentation (but makes sense since 128bit keylen=1. It was also necessary to set the cipher type, etc. Basically, anything that can be set must be set, and things you are not using (like WEP, if it's WPA you are setting up) should be set to off.
